We live in a very erotic world where lust, beauty and sex are celebrated and openly portrayed in our arts and culture and there is no shame for many people.
With all we are exposed to, lust builds up and pornography becomes a common thing to satisfy that lust and then the addiction is born and for many they can tell you that they started watching porn maybe after watching a series with very sexual contents, scrolling through social media with a lot of pictures of nearly naked women.
And at one point you might have been tempted and maybe even been drawn in the addiction of pornography. But for the shame of it, many fear getting help from someone they know and their best bet is running online; on YouTube, articles and websites for help but almost all the solutions they find is somehow dependent on the action of that individual to stop the addiction.
And as many can attest, that usually does not work, its not just an addiction, it’s a spirit, it’s a demonic activity and many Christians fear to mention it in prayer and that’s why they resort to these helps from online.
I have personally looked through some of these materials online that is meant to help and to summaries some, this is their argument, don’t feed the habit, delete any triggers such as social media, unfollow people who promote such and sexual contents, watch your thoughts and always be quick to discard off thoughts that leads to the addiction and only a few bring in God as a help, but even the way he is presented, its more like, he takes the back seat.
But today, I want to share with you one, only one way that I have found to be the most powerful in destroying pornography addiction and it comes from what one man of God taught me; when God is away, that’s when Satan a chance to plants seed of evil desires and sin and the seed grows into the addictions and all sorts of ungodliness.
This is drawn from the experience in the garden of Eden, when God could come in the cool of the day, Satan could not mix or come in near Adam and Eve to sow his seeds and the only time he could come was when was God away, that’s when Eve met the serpent and resulted into the fall.
What this means is that, if you constantly live in the presence of God which is a reality of the new birth, there is no room for the devil to influence you with his thoughts and thereby lead you into the addiction of pornography. Light and darkness cannot mix.
I love what Smith Smiggleworth’s said one time, he said, he was not the kind who could pray for two three hours or even four hours a day, but he was the kind who could never spend more than five minutes without praying.
In our time, it might not be very practical to follow in his footsteps but surely what we can learn from him is that it is possible to stay in the presence of God all the time, all your life and as such, pornography is rendered powerless.
This staying in the presence is not spending 20 hours praying, reading the bible and listening to sermons or staying in church all day all night, but a life cultivated that every time, you are thinking about God, every time scriptures are crossing your mind and you are meditating on them.
Your free time is filled with one activity only, praying reading the word, meditating on the word and even when you are with friends, you are discussing scriptures and as you begin to grow in it you start to love solitude more because you feel God drawing you to something, His love.
Let me explain why this is the most powerful tool against pornography. If you stay in the presence of God all the time, all your life, you develop a love for God and this love grows deeper and deeper everyday every time and you find yourself desiring the presence of God more than anything not because you don’t have any other thing to do but because God becomes your satisfaction, your desires and thereby lust and its desires are flushed out because light and darkness cannot mix in the same room.
So, this is where you start, don’t commit to yourself to break that addiction, don’t try to but just starts to love God, little by little and as the scriptures says deep calls unto deep but at the noise of the waterspouts.
It can start by setting a reminder to remind you to pray after a maybe 2 hours or three and it can be a simple short prayer of 5 minutes or it can be a simple act of placing bibles all around the places where you expect to be that day such that you are reminded to read one.
It’s the small repetitive actions that builds into a lifestyle.
